Richfield Rotary Club Literacy Initiative
Richfield Rotary club received a Community Action Grant (CAP) of $1000 in December of 2008.  The grant will be used to support literacy development of Richfield children and youth at the preschool and middle school level.   In addition to the funding, the club will work at the primary school level as volunteer readers.  This new grant compliments our other school projects at the Intermediate Level with the Dictionary Project, and at the High School level with STRIVE.  Richfield Rotary is now involved with public school students at all levels in the community.  Our new initiate includes the following:
We will purchase 50 Scholastic books and materials for English and Spanish take home learning packs.  Teachers in the Early childhood special education program would then work with parents as a team to help prepare their children for kindergarten.
Richfield Rotarians will collaborate with the Minnesota Valley women's Club to read to children and provide other classroom support for literacy learning beginning in January.
Funds will be used to expand the book lab at Richfield Middle School in areas of science and social studies.  Supplemental materials will also be purchased to help teacher to adjust for differences in language and reading levels.
All the children loved having Sally Parks come each week to help them learn to read!
