Reminder - No Meeting on November 10

There will be NO regular meeting on Thursday, November 10.  Instead, attend the Rotary Area 3 Veterans Day Luncheon on Friday, November 11.

Reminder - November 11 Veterans Day Luncheon

In lieu of our regular meeting, Richfield Rotarians will join with other Area Three Rotarians for the annual Veterans Day Luncheon at Bearpath Country Club in Eden Prairie MN 55437  (See details in Upcoming Events section).

Help honor our veterans, including Richfield Rotarians David Butler, David Melcher and Tommy Thompson.

November 3 Meeting Highlights

Thought for the Week

David Melcher told us about a “skinny guy who set a record for a transcontinental run across the U.S.” and then shared an appropriate quote from Mahatma Gandhi:   "Strength does not come for physical capacity; it comes from indomitable will.”

Happy Dollars

  • There were lots of happy dollars in honor of Natalie Landwehr's induction.
  • Jean Fox invited Rotarians to the last Guy Falkes' Day celebration at Jean's daughter and son's house in Burnsville, since they are planning to sell their property and move into a condo.

New Member Induction:  Natalie Landwehr

President Chip Groth inducted Natalie Landwehr into membership, highlighting opportunities for Natalie to contribute to making our community and world a better place through membership in Rotary.

Natalie shared her enthusiasm for Rotary, noting that her father is a Rotarian.  She majored in economics in college, and is “very numbers oriented.”  She is a new resident of Bloomington and is employed as a Demand Planning Analyst at Best Buy.  Her classification will be “demand planning,” which involves “making sure the right products are in the right place at the right time to meet customer needs.”  Natalie commented, “I appreciate being part of this community,” including membership in the Rotary Club of Richfield.

Club Supports International Service Project in Uganda

The St. Louis Park Sunrise Rotary Club is looking for other Rotary Clubs to contribute to the “Dignity Restored Poultry Initiative,” through which 100 Ugandan women will learn to raise chickens for food and income to provide a sustainable livelihood.  We learned about the project through Mike Spencer, a SLP Sunrise Club member who is a frequent visitor at Richfield Rotary meetings.

Club members approved a contribution of $500 from the Richfield Rotary Foundation. President Chip will confirm our participation, and arrangements will be made to schedule a program so we can learn more about the project.  Chip shared that he would like to find ways of leveraging support from the community through mini-fundraisers that are easy to carry out and increase our visibility in the community.

Program:  Dictionary Service Project Preparations

Since 2006, Richfield Rotary Club has provided dictionaries to every third grader in Richfield, whether public, private, parochial or home schooled.   Including this year, Richfield Rotarians will have distributed just over 4,000 dictionaries, at a cumulative cost in excess of $6,500.  This year’s project is coordinated by Pam Serdar, pictured at left with President Chip Groth.

Pam put us to work putting Rotary labels on the first page of each dictionary.  See photos below, showing David Butler, John Devlin, Natalie Landwehr, Lynne Alexander and Jean Fox putting labels in dictionaries.  Many hands made light work!

She also distributed a schedule for delivery to each building, listed in the article, “Richfield Rotary in Service.”  Please notify Pam if you are available to help deliver dictionaries on one or more of the dates listed.

Richfield Rotary Fund-raiser Scheduled for November 14

November 14 - Richfield Rotary Night at Pizza Luce

On November 14, Richfield Rotary will receive 25% of the pre-tax proceeds from meals purchased at Pizza Luce from folks presenting Richfield Rotary flyers.  Proceeds will be used to purchase hats, gloves and mittens for our “Warm Hands, Heads and Hearts” project, which benefits elementary and secondary students in the Richfield Public Schools.

Pizza Luce has supplied us with 500 hard copy flyers, which Richfield Rotarians are asked to distribute throughout the metro area, especially those suburbs close in proximity to Richfield.  A pdf copy of the flyer is also attached, which you may distribute electronically, with instructions to print out the flyer and bring it to Pizza Luce on November 14.

In addition to distributing the flyers, we'll also need Richfield Rotarians to be present in force, and to bring family members and friends!  Let's fill Pizza Luce on November 14 to fund Warm Hands, Heads and Hearts!!
