Happy Dollars

Lots of folks were happy!

  • Jay Clark announced the kick-starter campaign for his wife Bridget’s new Benta Belt business.
  • Mayor Debbie Goettel (right) announced the publication of the new Richfield Social Service Resource Card, and hopes it will be posted in area businesses and offices.
  • Steve Larson shared that he took his future son-in-law fishing last weekend and told him that he could have his daughter’s hand in marriage if he could catch a fish.  Steve added, “He’s still out on the lake fishing!”
  • Mike Spencer shared that Richfield Schools is hosting 7 Amity Aides - 5 at RDLS, 2 at RMS.  He suggested that our club host one or more of the Amity Aides at club activities during the year.
Program:  Diane Peterson and David Feinwichs, "HMO Fraud in Minnesota"

Diane Peterson is a self described “health care policy advocate” who was working to obtain guaranteed health care for Minnesotans when she met David Feinwachs, a former lobbyist for the Minnesota Hospital Association, who was fired from his job after uncovering evidence of overbilling and lack of transparency with regard to HMO services to low income Minnesotans.  Since his firing, Feinwachs and Peterson have worked together to advocate for increased transparency and accountability on the part of HMOs.

Feinwachs reviewed key concerns, including lack of oversight or auditing by the State, lack of transparency with respect to health care costs and billing practices, and an “Alice in Wonderland” accounting system that is inconsistent with General Accounting and Taxation (GAT) practices used in other organizations and businesses.  Feinwachs advocates “complete and periodic audits” of HMOs and other insurance programs, concluding, “There needs to be a watch dog” to prevent fraud and abuse within the health care insurance system.

VEAP STUDENT HUNGER PROJECT

Chip Groth is soliciting volunteers the VEAP Student Hunger Project, which will resume in September and continue throughout the 2016-2017 School Year.  Volunteers from participating clubs gather for about an hour each Thursday evening to pack food bags for distribution the following day to needy students in the Bloomington, Edina and Richfield Schools.  (The photo at left shows Anthony Bradford, Kristen Nelson and other Hunger Project volunteers from the 2015-2016 school year.)

John Devlin has served as our club’s project “captain” for the past two years but would welcome another member serving in that capacity this year.  The captain for each participating Rotary Club serves as volunteer coordinator for 5 Thursday evening packing sessions during the year.
