August 25 Meeting Reminder

Sergeant At Arms:  Jay Clark

Thought for the Week:  Kirsten Nelson

Program:  Michael Petersen - "What's Working in Richfield Public Works?"

Dave Melcher met Michael Peterson during the recent Neighborhood Night Out gathering, and invited him to speak at a Rotary meeting.  Michael, a public works engineer, will talk about Sweet Streets,  the new gas lines being installed, and the extensive repaving plan for Richfield's city streets.   Whether you're a Richfield resident, operate a business in Richfield, or are a regular visitor, you'll be interested in this presentation.

August 18 Meeting Highlights

Happy Dollars / Announcements

  • There were a whole string of Happy Dollars, meaning lots of contributions to the Richfield Rotary Foundation to support worthy projects in our community!

  • Chip Groth solicited feedback regarding the selection process for the student we'll be sending to Rotary Camp Enterprise.

Program:  Khalil Houri - "Introduction to Islam and Muslims"

Khalil Houri immigrated from Lebanon and has lived in Minnesota since 1998. He is a certified speaker from the Islamic Resource Center, which was founded to  build understanding of Islam and Muslims.

Khalil has given many presentations in schools, churches, and in other  organizations, in part to counter radicals who have “misrepresented the religion and  committed atrocities.”  He observed, “Some people are afraid and “paint all  Muslims with one brush.  Education is key” to countering the fear and  misunderstanding.

Some facts about Islam:

  • Islam means “peace through submission to God.”
  • It is a monotheistic religion, like Judaism and Christianity.
  • Six key beliefs are God (Allah), angels (including Gabriel), the prophets (including Jesus and Muhammad), holy books (including the Psalms and the Quran), Day of Judgment (Heaven and Hell), and divine decree (God to Muhammad)
  • There are 1.5 billion Muslims, 1/4 of world's population.  The greatest concentration is in Indonesia, India and Pakistan.  Middle eastern countries have a minority of the world’s Muslims.
  • There are two main branches, Sunni and Shia.  The majority are Shia.

The Five Pillars of Islam, or required practices, include:

  • Declaration of Faith through prayer (5 times/day)
  • Masjid (attendance at a mosque)
  • Mandatory alms- donation
  • Fasting during Ramadan
  • Pilgrimage to Mecca once during life- enactment of the trials of Abraham.
