October 20 Meeting Highlights

Thought for the Week

Jean Fox shared lots of pithy sayings, including  "Bad decisions make good stories,” which brought to mind David Melcher’s many misadventures over the years!

Happy Dollars / Announcements

  • Tommy Thompson showed us a $2 bill he received in change recently.  He recalled being paid in the Navy in $2 bills!
  • David Butler shared that the Richfield Historical Society is looking to partner with the City and School District to remain vibrant going forward.  David thought Richfield Rotary should know since a number of members have been active with the Historical Society over the years.  Dave is pictured at right, painting the Richfield Historical Society exhibit building.
  • Jean and Denny appreciated the beautiful memorial service that was held in Indiana for Denny's mother.
  • Barb Devlin expressed thanks to Kirsten Nelson for her help with Membership.  Kirsten invited Marco Lanz and Natalie Landwehr to our October 13 meeting, while Barb was out of town.

Club Assembly

We had a wide-ranging discussion and updates, highlighted below:

Follow-up to District Governor’s Visit

District Governor Mark Hegstrom enjoyed his visit to our club on October 13.  President Chip reviewed Mark’s goals and the requirements for a Presidential Citation and noted that we are close in a number of areas.

MyRotary.Org

One of the requirements for a Presidential Citation is for every club member to sign into MyRotary.Org.  Signing in to My Rotary gives you a customized experience and easier access to tools and information that are relevant to you.  It is a great way to access and exchange Rotary-related information, including keeping track of your personal contributions to The Rotary Foundation and Polio Plus.  If you have not done so already, take a few minutes go to MyRotary.Org and register!

The Rotary Foundation and Polio Plus

President Chip will e-mail a report of giving to TRF and Polio Plus to the membership, for our review.  Members are asked to e-mail Chip regarding your own contributions, to insure that the information is up-to-date.

Richfield Rotary In Service

  • Camp Enterprise - Richfield Rotary will be sponsoring Richfield High School student Maddie Lennon.  Maddie and her advisor, Dean Breuer, will attend a future Rotary meeting and report on her experience.
  • Dictionary project - Dictionaries have been ordered.  Following receipt, club members will be asked to help insert Rotary labels into the dictionaries, and help distribute the dictionaries to the schools.  Thanks to Pam Serdar is coordinating the Dictionary Project.
  • Pizza Luce Fundraiser for Warm Hands, Heads, Hearts (Nov. 14) - Chip will provide us with flyers to hand out in advance.  Club members should plan to eat at Pizza Luce that evening and bring lots of friends!

Area 3 Veterans Day Luncheon

There will be NO Meeting on November 10.  Members are encouraged to attend the Area 3 Veterans Day Luncheon on Friday, November 11.  The club will sponsor the attendance of up to two Richfield veterans as our guests, with priority given to World War II veterans.  Jean Fox will publicize the opportunity.   If there are multiple applicants, the guests will be selected by lottery.

Richfield Rotary Website

Jean and Denny Fox are reformatting our club website to include a revolving carousel of photos showing member engagement in club activities and projects.   Please e-mail Jean with any photos.

Rotary Ambassador and Rotary Apparel

Each week, one member will serve as the club “ambassador,” standing near the service door entrance to welcome speakers and guests and direct them to our 2nd floor meeting room.  Barb Devlin will order a vest with the Rotary insignia, to be worn by the designated Rotary Ambassador.

Members may also wish to order your own Rotary garb.  Sources include Russell Hampton and National Awards.

New Member Proposed

New Member Application Received

Natalie Landwehr has submitted her application for membership in the Rotary Club of Richfield.  Natalie is a 2013 graduate of The College of Saint Benedict with a major in Economics and a minor in Accounting.   She lives in Bloomington and works in the area of Demand Planning for Best Buy.  Natalie is familiar with Rotary, having participated in a junior Rotary club in high school.  She is also a Paul Harris Fellow.  Natalie’s interests reveal a commitment to service, and include work with Habitat for Humanity and the “Blackwoods Blizzard Tour” to benefit ALS.

President Chip hopes to install Natalie into membership on November 3.  Please contact Chip with any questions or concerns.

Richfield Rotary Fund-raiser Scheduled for November 14

November 14 - Richfield Rotary Night at Pizza Luce

On November 14, Richfield Rotary will receive 10% of the proceeds from meals purchased at Pizza Luce from folks presenting Richfield Rotary flyers.  Proceeds will be used to purchase hats, gloves and mittens for our “Warm Hands, Heads and Hearts” project, which benefits elementary and secondary students in the Richfield Public Schools.

Pizza Luce will supply us with 500 flyers.  Richfield Rotarians are asked to distribute the flyers throughout the metro area, especially those suburbs close in proximity to Richfield.  We'll also need Richfield Rotarians to be present in force that evening, with family members and friends!  Let's fill Pizza Luce on November 14!!

Thought for the Week

Rotary is like a stool supported by 4 legs:  The Rotary Foundation (End Polio Now!), Membership, Club Support, and Public Image.  We need every Rotarian on that stool to build vibrant clubs to better serve humanity.
