Meeting Highlights

JUNE 20 and 27 Meeting Highlights

Our June 20 meeting included a new member induction and a two-part program.

John DeBettignies, Vice President for Member Services at RBCU, was installed as a member of Richfield Rotary.   John says, “It’s all about service,” and is eager to “do all I can” to help with the Richfield Rotary Relaunch.  John will present a program about his personal and professional life at our July 11 meeting.

Two-Part Program:

“Beautifying Richfield Through Public Art Installations and Activities”

Joyce Marrie, Richfield Arts Commission (RAC) co-chair and Mary Kay Champa, RAC staff liason, told about the Art Commission and its efforts to beautify Richfield through  public art, including several murals on buildings.  The newest project is in conjunction with Richfield’s “Sweet Streets” initiative.   The Arts Commission conducted a poetry contest and winning poems from youth and adult entries are being sandblasted into cement, for placement in newly constructed sidewalks on 66th Street.  See Upcoming Events for information about the July 13 Sidewalk Poetry Celebration, sponsored by the Richfield Arts Commission in partnership with Crossroads Panorama Theatre Company, led by Joyce Marrie.  (Photo: Mary Kay on left, Joyce on right)

Part II:  International Grant Project in India: “A Ten-Year Retrospective”- Sandhya Gupta

After years of working as engineers in the U.S., ten years ago Sandhya and her husband moved back to India with their young daughter.  For several years, they volunteered in local schools, learning their strengths and weaknesses.  In 2014, they founded Aavishkaar (which means “adventure”) to nurture curious, creative and critical thinking.  They worked with teachers to substitute active, hands-on learning for rote memorization, to help students develop a “joyful relationship with science and math.”  In five years, Aavishkaar has impacted 16,000 students, 1300 teachers, and 400 educators in schools throughout India.  Pictured at right are some girls participating in hands-on learning through Aavishkaar.

Richfield Rotary has partnered with four other Rotary Clubs to apply for matching grants from District 5950 and Rotary International to support activities of Aavishkaar, particularly on behalf of poor students and communities.

June 27 President Recognition

At our June 27 meeting, we enjoyed breakfast at our new meeting place, Local Roots, shared favorite memories and accomplishments of the 2018 – 2019 program year, and recognized President Kirsten Nelson for her leadership.  Barb Devlin will serve as club president in 2019-2020.

THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK

Community service has taught me all kinds of skills and increased my confidence. You go out there and think on your feet, work with others and create something from nothing. That's what life's all about.
