February 7, 2019 Meeting Highlights

Happy Dollars and Announcements

  • There were lots of Happy Dollars, including John Devlin making a sizable donation in honor of his new Chevy Traverse!

  • Rotarians who volunteered at the MIRA Three Kings celebration received certificates of appreciation from the MIRA Board of Directors.

  • Barb Devlin recognized Jean and Denny Fox for updating the photos on the Richfield Rotary website.  Thanks, Jean and Denny!

  • Barb Devlin shared information about Junior Achievement (JA) that she obtained at the District 5950 Mid-Year Assembly.  JA is based on three pillars:  financial literacy, work / career readiness, and entrepreneurship.  JA is in 4,000 classrooms across the 9-county Twin Cities metro area, including in the Richfield Public Schools.  JA is looking for four volunteers, two at Sheridan Hills and two at R-STEM, to teach five, 45-minute Junior Achievement sessions over a five-week period.  The dates and times for each session would be set by the volunteer and the teacher.   Please contact Barb if you are interested in volunteering.

Program - Little Free Library Planning Meeting

The remainder of the meeting was devoted to planning for the Little Free Library Project.  Click here to read a detailed summary of the discussion.

Since 2006, Richfield Rotary has provided dictionaries to every third grader in Richfield’s public, private, parochial and home schools.  We recently received a large packet of thank you notes from third Graders at R-Stem.  Students said they enjoy “learning new words” along with other interesting things like the longest word in the English language, American Sign Language, the Periodic Tables, and the U.S. Presidents.  One student said, “This is the biggest book I have ever had!”

Third grade teacher Sandy Sandvig added this note:
“Thank you for giving the third graders in my class a dictionary.  I appreciate the support it gives them.  I ask them to look up words using it frequently.  For some, it teachers them more about A-B-C order.  For others, it is the meanings of words.  As you can see from their letters, they love the 'extras.'”
Thanks to HaeKyung Thompson for coordinating the dictionary delivery.   She hopes to have a date for delivery to third graders at Richfield Dual Language School soon!

The Bread of Hope initiative provides unsold bread from Lakewinds Cooperative to Hope Presbyterian Church for the Loaves and Fishes evening meal.  The Rotary, Optimists and Lions Clubs along with Headway Family Services each deliver bread one day per week, with Rotary delivering on Thursday morning following our regular meeting.

Listed below are volunteers who have signed up to are deliver bread through February, 2019.  Contact Chip Groth to volunteer for the month of March.  Thank you!
