Reminder - November 17 Meeting

Sergeant at Arms - Lynne Alexander

Thought for the Week - David Butler

Program:  Pam Serdar - "In Search of the Black Madonna and art of Southern France Pilgrimage"

I had the joy of leading, with my friend Wilbur (Denise) Frink, trip to Southern France exploring the places where great painters found the light amazing--Matisse, Cezanne, Chagall--and where the traditions  include the legends (?) of Mary Magdalene after the resurrection. I'll share the journey with pictures from the trip--amazing art, beautiful scenery, fabulous churches, mystical grottoes, excellent food and great company!

Highlights - November 11 Veterans Day Luncheon

In lieu of our regular meeting, Richfield Rotarians joined with other Area Three Rotarians for the annual Veterans Day Luncheon at Bearpath Country Club in Eden Prairie.

Among the officials present was Senator Amy Klobuchar who, following a tough election, reminded us that "Veterans Day focuses on what unites us, not what divides us."

The keynote speaker was Brigadier General Sandra Best, the first female general in the history of the Minnesota National Guard.  Best noted proudly that 17.5% of the Minnesota National Guard is female, and that percentage rises to 22% of the Minnesota Air National Guard.  Best comes from a multi-generational military family and observed that, "for military families, Veterans Day is a day of quiet reflection" concerning their commitment to "absolute service to country."  Best is pictured at right, as she was sworn in by Gov. Mark Dayton.

Richfield Rotary attendees included President Chip Groth, Lynne Alexander, Pat Dale, John and Barb Devlin, and David Melcher, a U.S. Army veteran.  Two other Richfield Rotary veterans, David Butler and Tommy Thompson, had registered but were unable to attend.

Richfield Rotary Fills Pizza Luce

November 14 - Richfield Rotary Night at Pizza Luce

Yesterday, Richfield Rotary received 25% of the pre-tax proceeds from meals purchased at Pizza Luce from folks presenting Richfield Rotary flyers.  One of the managers commented last evening, "We have seen lots of flyers, beginning with folks coming in earlier in the day."

Proceeds will support our “Warm Hands, Heads and Hearts” project, which provides winter hats, gloves and mittens for needy elementary and secondary students in the Richfield Public Schools.

Thanks to Richfield Rotarians, family members and friends who helped spread the word and who supported the fund-raiser by dining at Pizza Luce.  We enjoyed great food and fellowship while doing good in our community!

President Chip will have a report soon regarding fund-raiser proceeds.

Thought for the Week

"Patriotism is not the fear of something,
but the love of something.
It is not a burst of emotion,
but a steady devotion."

Adlai Stevenson (as paraphrased by Sen. Amy Klobuchar in her remarks at the Nov. 11 Veterans Day Luncheon)
