Please attend this meeting, and bring any items for the Silent Auction if you have not already delivered them to Kirsten Nelson.  (Please contact Jean or Kirsten to let them know what you will be contributing to the auction.)

December 15 Meeting Highlights

New Member Induction

We welcomed HaeKyung Nielsen as our newest Rotary member!  HaeKyung remarked, “When I was your server at Champps, I watched and listened a lot as you conducted your meetings, and decided I wanted to become a part of Richfield Rotary.”  HaeKyung left Champps to coordinate charitable initiatives of the Hard Rock Café at the Mall of America, but will be leaving that position to become a full-time Mom and volunteer, including service as a member of the Rotary Club of Richfield!

Paul Harris Fellow Award Presentation

President Chip Groth presented a Paul Harris Fellow pin to Jean Fox, with stones symbolizing that Jean’s cumulative contributions to The Rotary Foundation now total $5000.   A Paul Harris Fellow is awarded for each $1000 in cumulative contributions to TRF.  Contributions to Polio Plus count as part of your TRF Contributions.
President Chip congratulated Jean and invited anyone wanting to make a charitable contribution before the end of 2016 to consider contributing to TRF / Polio Plus.  Click here to learn more and make a contribution online.  Regardless of the amount, Rotary's goal is to have every Rotarian contribute something every year.

Program:  Tim Carter, General Manager:  "Backstage Tour of Richfield / Bloomington Honda"

Tim Carter provided a terrific tour of the RB Honda facility.   Tom Wood bought the original store in 1986, and it has served as a catalyst of their group's growth. The group now includes the adjacent Mitsubishi dealership along with dealerships in other states.  Tim noted, “In addition to car dealerships, The Tom Wood group also includes tractor, motorcycle and trailer dealerships and even a small airport.  That’s why we say, ‘We're here to move you!’"

The new Richfield/ Bloomington Honda store “was built for the future,” featuring “long-lasting, pre-cast concrete” and employing 188 employees (up from 97 in the old facility.)  Built with union labor  over the course of a year “like an erector set,” the store went from 22 to 49 service bays and is the 2nd largest Honda facility in the country.  To maximize space, they “went up,” creating a two-story showroom dubbed “the jewelry box” that is “lit up like the jewelry display cases at Hub Jewelers and provides drivers on 494 with a stunning “window-shopping experience.”

Other features of the facility:

  • Gold certified for HVAC
  • Artwork is from the Richfield History Center archives, and depicts Richfield history
  • RB Honda has its own professional photographer and photo lab to take photos of vehicles that are part of its “ongoing auction.”  (See photo lab at right.)
  • The service department is on two floors, servicing 150-200 cars per day.  The first floor includes an indoor commercial car wash.  Heavy service work is done on the 2nd floor. (See photo below left.)
  • The tire carousel is “very efficient” and allows RB Honda to offer very competitive pricing.  (See photo below right)
  • As a convenience to customers, RB Honda also has its own rental car company, a small Caribou Coffee, and an Allstate insurance agency.
