October 4, 2018 Meeting Highlights

Happy Dollars

There were lots of happy Rotarians, including Dave Melcher, who lost a crown and is grateful to Jay Clark for granting same day dental appointments!
John and Barb Devlin are also celebrating birthdays, and presented a birthday check to the Richfield Rotary Foundation.

Program:  HaeKyung Thompson, “Veterans Suicide Awareness”

Our planned speaker was unable to attend, so HaeKyung Thompson spoke on the important issue veterans suicide awareness.   HaeKyung told us about the VETERAN SUICIDE PREVENTION HIKE/WALK - 22 KM, with 22 KG, for the 22 veterans a day who commit suicide.  The hike / walk is sponsored by the "Silkies," an offshoot of the Irreverent Warriors, formed in 2015 to bring veterans together using humor and camaraderie to prevent veteran suicide and reduce the effects of PTSD.

HaeKyung was accompanied by her father, Jay Nielsen, a Vietnam veteran who has suffered from PTSD for many years.  Jay observed that soldiers who experience multiple, short tours of duty rather may be more prone to PTSD since there is "such a stark contrast between their combat experiences and normal life outside.”  Jay complimented the Minneapolis VA Hospital for providing excellent care, and said that “talking to people who listen” (like Richfield Rotarians) is great therapy.

HaeKyung urged Rotarians to share the Veterans Crisis Line number if they see a veteran in crisis.

Tommy Thompson Update

Tommy Thompson’s daughter, Patty Gourley, informed us that her Dad has been hospitalized three times since August and is now back in rehab.  He will not be going back to his apartment, and the family is "in the process of trying to find a place with more care for him.”  Patti thanked Chip Groth for staying in touch on behalf of Richfield Rotary, and "will let Tommy know we are interested in how he is doing."   Please keep Tommy in your thoughts and prayers.  Click here if you wish to send a message to Tommy via his daughter, Patty.

Richfield Rotary Seeking Community Input

Richfield Rotary collected some feedback from Richfield residents at Penn Fest, and would like to continue collecting feedback via an online survey.  Thanks to Alyssa Swanson for posting the survey in an online format, with a link that will appear on our Richfield Rotary Facebook page, web page, and the Richfield Community Page.  Please feel free to forward the following link to any Richfield resident you think might be interested in responding:
