Induction of New Members

Richfield Mayor Maria Regan Gonzales is planning to attend this meeting and be inducted into membership.   She will share a membership with Ward 1 Council member Simon Trautmann, who hopes to start attending meetings in December.  Richfield Rotary will benefit from Maria and Simon's ideas, enthusiasm, and community connections.   Please welcome them!  (And if you know someone who might be interested in Rotary, invite them to the meeting as a guest!)

Business / Action Items

There will be several items, including updates on fund-raising and the Dictionary Project; possible service opportunities in December and January; and opportunities for club leadership and engagement.

Program:  “Celebrating The Rotary Foundation”

The Home page of Rotary International states, “Rotary is where neighbors, friends and problem-solvers share ideas, join leaders, and take action to make lasting change.”  The Rotary Foundation (TRF) provides the “fuel” for much of that change, making TRF a “charity of choice” for many.  In recognition of November as Rotary Foundation month, Barb Devlin will share highlights from presentations by 2017-2018 RI President Ian Riseley (left) and Foundation Trustee Jennifer Jones, and award a Paul Harris +8 pin to Jean Fox (right), who has earned 8 Paul Harris Fellowships for her cumulative contributions to TRF over time.  Barb has asked Jean to share why The Rotary Foundation (TRF) has become one of her charities of choice, and other TRF contributors are invited to comment as well.

Meeting Highlights

NOVEMBER 7, 2019 MEETING HIGHLIGHTS

Guests

We welcomed Mark Watczka (Richfield Fire Department) and Justin Johnson (Minneapolis Fire Department) (pictured far right with Chip Groth) who told us about Operation Warm, an effort by area fire departments to provide new winter jackets for distribution to children in need.  November 22 is the tentative date for jacket distribution at STEM Elementary School.  Chip would like to coordinate distribution of Rotary hats and mittens (our Warm Hands / Heads / Hearts Program) on the same day.   Stay tuned for more information!
We also welcomed prospective member Michael McDougal, Prairieland Insurance and Investment Services (right), along with our speakers, Steve Schneeberger and Claire Plank Gahler representing the Richfield Foundation.

New Member Induction

We celebrated the induction of three new members (L to R), Karen Crane (Richfield branch manager, RBCU), Marta Shahsavand (Principal of Richfield Dual Language School; shared membership with Latanya Daniels), and Ella Lingat (financial advisor with AXA Advisors).  Welcome!

Program:  “Richfield Foundation Perspectives on Richfield”

Richfield Foundaton Board members Steve Schneeberger and Claire Plank Gahler shared information about the Richfield Foundation, which awards 18-20 grants in the $1000 – 2000 range to organizations benefitting the Richfield community.   Grants are funded through the Foundation’s endowment, along with revenue from its annual wine tasting event.
When asked about possible Rotary service projects, Steve noted, “Based on past grants awarded, the biggest areas of need include children and youth, senior citizens, and adult English language learners.”  Claire added, “Most of the organizations receiving grants are looking for volunteers.”

Area 3 Rotary Clubs Honor Veterans

Several Richfield Rotarians were among the attendees at the annual Area 3 Veterans Day Luncheon.  Representatives of Cub Scout Troop 384 presented the colors.  Pictured with the scout members were (L-R) Richfield Mayor Maria Regan Gonzalez, Chip Groth, Barb Devlin, John DeBettignies, John Devlin, and Lynne Alexander.  Missing from the photo was Katie Rodriguez.

A brass quintet played a salute to veterans from each branch of the armed services.  An empty table memorialized those who gave their lives for our country.

In his keynote address, Congressman Dean Phillips shared that 75 members of Congress are Veterans, and that bills related to Veterans health, suicide prevention, and homelessness have received “near unanimous support.”  Congressman Phillips has formed a Veterans Advisory Council because “Representation begins with listening.”  Congressman Phillips conveyed a debt of gratitude to all veterans, stating, “America will remain the Land of the Free as long as we remain The Home of the Brave.”
